The story of Il Marroneto begins in 1974, in two small rooms in a historical building dated in 1246. An ancient dryer for chestnuts, where the Mori family starts, a little ‘for fun and a bit’ for passion, to produce the Brunello. Few bottles, the purpose of which was to translate into scents and flavors that culture of “making wine”, that still was not the prerogative of a business, but only an expression of a land, a tradition and a wonderfully generous nature. That’s when “play with wine” becomes more than a game: a deep passion, a common thread that guides the choices of Alessandro. Who decides, in the 90s, to expand the cellar of Il Marroneto, realizing that idea that shies away from logic dictated by aesthetics tout-court but that binds tightly to those principles, in fact very simple and immediate, that “good practice” of making wine requires.
A large and austere environment, inserted into a stony slope, guards on the inside large oak barrels from Allier and Slavonia, where Brunelli wines from Il Marroneto seasoned patiently and a little heart, hidden in the depths, where the historical bottles are waiting patiently the passing of time.
The northern zone of Montalcino is characterized by higher elevations, steep slopes, and cooler temperatures. These conditions are ideal for creating Brunellos of significant ageing potential, showing complexity, increased aromatics, classic tannic structure and nervy acidity. The precision of Sangiovese is transparently conveyed when using the most natural and minimal of winemaking techniques.

Certified Sommelier
Somm (n.) - a shortened reference for sommelier, a trained and knowledgeable wine professional. SOMM (film) - a documentary by Director Jason Wise about the Master Sommelier examination. Similar to the celebrity chef phenomenon and due in-part to the documentary film series SOMM (available on Netflix), wine professionals are seeing their own emergence and nod on the global stage. We’re proud to introduce our own resident Somm and Managing Partner, Jake Assaf. Jake’s been a humble servant of the grape for more than 14 years and eagerly boasts ‘someone has got to taste wine and cheese for the rest of us.’ Jake is excellent at just that and is also a jedi master at pairing wines to perfectly suit your tastes and preferences. He personally selects the wines on our tap system (8 wines available on draft) and reserve bottle list. Our wines rotate frequently and aim to introduce you to wines you’ve never tried from producers you’ve likely not heard of. Not sure what you like? You're in good hands and we can't wait to pour you a proper glass.
